Hey everyone. I’m looking for some pilots who’d like to read through “Redefining Airmanship” by Tony Kern as part of a study group. I first got introduced to this book a few years ago in a Crew Resource Management class. It’s right up there with “Stick and Rudder”. It’s one of those books that I think every pilot should have on their shelves. If you’re interested, please send me a message/tag me. I’m looking to have a discussion at least once a month.
Hi JD, I’m Christian from Germany, I hold an EASA as well as an FAA PPL(A) and “Redefining Airmanship” has been on my reading list for quite some time. Up to now, my readings focused more on stick & rudder skills (W. Langewiesche, R. Stowell, S. Imeson etc.), but I would be happy to join your study group!
G’Day, Chris from Australia. As a returning PPL (FW) from military flying (RW) I’m interested in this topic and will order the book this week.
Cheers
Chris
Hey guys. Thanks for expressing interest in this idea. If you’d like to have a real-time/video chat discussion, what days/times are good for you? I’m in America. Ernstl is in Germany, and Chris is in Australia. That would require some coordination. Real-time is my preference but would be willing to do this via some discussion posts if that were the only viable option.
Hi, real-time would be great, I’m sure we’ll find a suitable time window. I’m at Central European Summer Time (CEST, Z+2). What time zones are you guys in?
I’m on GMT, currently set to British Summer Time. Is that very different to you?
@moiraatkinson BST is one hour behind CEST, GMT is two hours behind, so you’re currently at Z+1. GMT (also called Universal Time Coordinated / UTC) is used globally for time reference and abbreviated with the letter Z (called “zulu”).
Huh? Time is one of the most complicated things I’ve come across. There are so many different forms of it! Atomic time, Zulu time, Universal time coordinated etc etc. I remember when I bought my parents a sundial and tried to set it up. If you didn’t have a phd in physics and maths, you’d be struggling! Even if you do it right, it goes 17 minutes out in November apparently.
Maybe we think of time a bit differently in the UK, but my impression is that GMT is always GMT. It’s the time that everything else is measured against, the most important time. As I live on the Greenwich meridian, I’m always on GMT, never GMT+1. If we’re on British Summer Time, then it’s GMT which advances an hour. That’s how we think of it here anyway. I can be Zulu +1, I don’t mind that.
Real-time is preferred for me as well. I live in the eastern US, and we’re currently UTC -4 (1200 UTC is 0800 here). My schedule is flexible. I have the most time in the mornings until September. Then, my better time will be in the evenings.
I can honestly chat at any time, though I probably can’t add much. It’s a great idea, but pick times to suit people with commitments like work. If it turns out to be 3am my time, it honestly won’t matter, as my time is my own.
